Enrique del Val’s paintings present to the viewer moments of intense emotion borrowed from his own personal life, often shared with his friends and family. Unlike many artists of his generation, del Val’s work is not primarily concerned with ideas or concepts, but with the challenge of making good paintings that arise from the honest, irreverent, joyful realm of his experience. The common denominators in del Val’s art practice are a celebration of life in its full scope, a deviation from conventional formalisms and an absolute love for painting.

In 2003 del Val graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, from Basque Country University, Spain. He expanded his studies with support from the Erasmus Scholarship in Athens, Greece, and also at Universidad Politecnica in Valencia, Spain with the support of the Seneca Scholarship. Del Val was artist in residence in Bilbaoarte Foundation in Bilbao, Spain 2001, and again at Fraser Studios in Sydney 2010-2011.

His first solo exhibition in Australia – “On The Complicity Among Rogues”, Space 3, Sydney, 2004 – was a declaration of principles, an affirmation of human connection despite circumstances, and a plea in favour of painting. In 2005 del Val lived and worked as a volunteer at Munipi and Jilamara Art Centres in Melville Island, NT. From 2008 to 2010 he and artist Aaron Matheson co-led the “Drawing In The City At Night” sessions in cafes, bars and sites of interest around central Sydney.

Del Val’s most recent exhibition, “Stories of Friendship, Irreverence and Magik”, was opened by John Olsen AO OBE at Maunsell and Wickes at Barry Stern Galleries in June 2011, and it presented to the public del Val’s whimsical universe of mystery and affection.

Del Val painted artist Ben Quilty for his 2010 Archibald Prize entry, and in 2011 he painted artist Adam Cullen. His work has been selected for Salon des Refuses at SH Ervin Gallery. In 2011 Del Val participated in Art Months’s Speed Dating Program. Awards include the 2011 Fetters Shed Prize of Robertson, the Waverly Art Prize 2006 for his Malville Island painting “Tiwi Mob Bus” and commendations at the Waverly Art Prize and the Glebe Art Show in 2009.

Enrique del Val currently lives and works in Robertson, in the Southern Highlands of NSW.
